A “QUICK!” Review of “Warfare (2025)”

An interesting movie, as it is based on a true war experience that the director had during the Iraq War. I think what makes the movie great is the phenomenal sound design and the grounded, realistic representation of war. There is no glorification of the soldiers or the war — it is dirty, frightening, and downright horrific. Most of the story revolves entirely around one house, as tension mounts throughout the film. The only problem is that there is no real understanding or exploration of any of the characters. However, I think that’s fine, because the film is more about the horror of war than anything else.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)”

This is still one of the best action movies I’ve ever seen! 2 hours of exhilarating action and practical stunts with phenomenal performances from everyone. You must WITNESS IT!

A “QUICK!” Review of “Civil War (2024)”

Civil War has such an interesting and even insane concept. The American states are becoming divided because of a fascist president and are now split into multiple factions. You think they will explore how it got to this, all the ideals of the differing factions and how on Earth would Texas and California be willing to team up. Sadly, this movie doesn’t go into depth about any of the political stuff and keeps it vague. Civil War is actually more of an exploration of war photography than the war itself. The characters are all one-dimensional archetypes with the jaded main character, the old wise teacher figure, the cool drunk guy and the newbie. It never goes beyond with the story. Nevertheless, the action set pieces are incredible. The visuals and soundtrack are also terrific but if you wanted something bold then this is sadly not it.

A Review of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)”

Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the best action movies ever made. I have been craving for another Tom Hardy sequel for years! I understand that because of the lawsuit with WB is the reason why the sequel still hasn’t happened. For now, we have a prequel concerning Charlize Theron’s character, Furiosa, from Fury Road. Is this a worthy entry in the Mad Max saga? One enjoyable thing about the Mad Max films is that they all feel very different. Furiosa is no exception. It is a very gang-driven, political and revenge-filled story. We get a lot of world-building on how the Wasteland is operating with all its factions. Seeing the political tension between the previous villain Immortan Joe and the new villain Dementus is very engaging. It is also interesting to see a calmer and smarter Immortan Joe. I also like that we get to see what “The Green Place” looked like as we only got tiny mentions before. The prequel story also successfully expands more on how Furiosa is where she...

A “QUICK!” Review of “Kingdom 2: Far and Away (2022)”

This sequel is 130 minutes of our main character, Shin, fighting in a war. We get great action set pieces after another, each of them being well-choreographed. Kento Yamazaki returns as Xin and is still lovable but the new character Qiang Lei, played by Nana Seino, is the new highlight. It is an incredibly fast-paced thrill ride! The film captures the scale of the war but it does still have that same issue from the first where they kind of make it too light-hearted. The plot is weaker as well since it is mostly just the war with some character development for Xin and Qiang. It is also disappointing to see 2 of the original main trio, Ying Zheng and He Liao Diao, do nothing in this entry. It does feel a bit long for what feels like a minimal plot as well. Still, wish more people were watching this as it is still very entertaining.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Kandahar (2023)”

This is a 2023 action movie about a US operative having to fight his way out of Afghanistan with his interpreter while being hunted. Wait isn’t that the same plot as Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant? It’s a little weird that this movie came out just a month after The Covenant with almost the same plot. The 3rd act and the ending is also VERY similar. The difference comes in execution and unfortunately, Kandahar isn’t as good. The first hour is incredibly slow as it setups the whole plot but it takes ages. The relationship between the main lead and the interpreter isn’t that strong. The message isn’t delivered in a very meaningful way. There is also not a lot of action set pieces even though there is a stellar night sequence in this one. It’s just another passable movie starring Gerald Butler.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant (2023)”

Guy Ritchie is known for his fast-paced, kinetic style, fun dialogue, over-the-top characters and violence. The Covenant is none of that. It is the least Guy Ritchie movie he has ever made and it is terrific. It is a suspenseful war thriller with intense action scenes. The subject of Afghanistan military interpreters is taken very seriously and with impressive restraint compared to his usual bombastic style. The cinematography is great, the score is terrific in elevating the tension, and everyone gives a great performance with special mention to Dar Salim as the interpreter. It is just a very entertaining movie.

A “QUICK!” Review of “Andor (2022)”

I really enjoyed Star Wars: Rogue One. The more gritty take on Star Wars with a focus on non-Jedi, regular people was a great part of that movie. However, I never cared for a prequel on the character of Cassian Andor from that movie. I liked the character in the movie but I didn’t love him as much as Obi-Wan or Boba Fett. To my surprise, his show is probably one of the best Star Wars shows so far. I love the darker and more mature storytelling of Andor. There are no jokes at all in this show. The struggles of the Rebels against the empire are gripping. The visuals and practical set are terrific. The acting is phenomenal and the characters are all interesting. This feels like a Star Wars aimed at adults and I love it! Looking forward to season 2 and hopefully more Star Wars content of similar quality!

A “QUICK!” Review of “Devotion (2022)”

I can completely understand having devotion to Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell. Those two are great in a straightforward war movie that is a bit lacking in actual action and bonding moments.

A Review of “Top Gun: Maverick (2022)”

After 36 years, we are finally able to watch the sequel to the 1986 Top Gun. I was a little baffled when they announced they were making a Top Gun sequel as I wasn’t fond of this idea of making sequels to really old movies for the sake of banking on nostalgia. The first film was pretty great and I just didn’t feel like the sequel could be as good as the first one. So is Top Gun: Maverick a cash grab or a worthy sequel? Firstly, the flying scenes are breathtaking! All of these sequences make you feel like you’re in the cockpit and air with them. This is because they did it practically by actually having the actors be in these jets for real. The director fitted cameras into these cockpits and attached them to the side of these jets. This allows for some downright amazing shots and makes the scenes feel more believable. The action scenes are just intense and exhilarating with it having me on the edge of my seat. This is especially noticeable in the final act which is on...
